For my son's birthday he got these AWESOME
Melissa and Doug Animal Magnets
. They are thick enough that he can easily grab them with his chubby 1 year old fingers. The magnet covers the whole back so I don't worry about a small magnet falling off and becoming a choking hazard. My son can stay entertained for at least 30 minutes playing with the magnets on my refrigerator and dishwasher. This is a great distraction for him while I try to whip up something for dinner.
